Richard “Rich” Kaplan, M.D., professor of pediatrics and the director of the Center for Safe and Healthy Children at the University of Minnesota Amplatz Children’s Hospital, passed away on Monday, August 19, 2013, at his home in Northfield, MN, from complications of progressive muscular atrophy.
After an early career in social work Dr. Kaplan received his M.D. from the University of South Dakota and completed his residency in pediatrics at Phoenix Children’s Hospital. He joined the faculty of the University of Minnesota in 2004 and rose to the rank of professor in 2012.
Dr. Kaplan was internationally recognized for his work in child abuse, co-authoring a leading text in the field, lecturing internationally, and leading courses in child abuse and neglect across the United States. He received numerous awards and honors including Outstanding Front Line Professional in 2009 from the American Professional Society on the Abuse of Children and the 2003 Commissioner’s Award from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services for Outstanding Leadership and Service in the Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect.
Rich will be most remembered for his compassionate care of children which was both inspiring and contagious. He will be sincerely missed by his colleagues here and nationwide.
